Why Georgian Invested in Ambience Healthcare

We are pleased to announce Georgian’s participation in Ambience Healthcare’s $243 million Series C round, joining Oak HC/FT, Andreessen Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins, the OpenAI Startup Fund and others.

Ambience is an AI platform for documentation, coding and clinical workflows, built to reduce administrative burden and protect revenue integrity at the point of care. The company’s AI Platform aims to improve the clinical workflow by introducing intelligent co-pilots that operate natively within electronic health record (EHR) systems. These AI agents are intended to alleviate administrative burden for clinicians and aim to deliver compliant point-of-care coding and supporting  documentation across 100+ specialties in an effort to ease clinical workflows. Ambience AI’s platform is designed to improve documentation quality, by ensuring accurate reimbursement and reducing compliance risk for health systems, with the aim of freeing clinicians to focus on patient care.

The Market Opportunity

The U.S. healthcare system is currently facing increased costs, limited access to care and escalating clinician burnout. In 2021, U.S. healthcare spending totalled $4.3 trillion – averaging approximately $12,900 per person. Of this $4.3 trillion in healthcare spending, approximately 25% can be  categorized as waste, of which a quarter could be recovered by addressing inefficiencies like administrative costs, operational waste and inefficient clinical spending. Administrative waste alone accounts for $266 billion annually.

Ambience Healthcare’s AI platform aims to reduce administrative burdens and strengthen revenue integrity by automating administrative tasks and reducing clinician burnout. Before the visit, Ambience’s pre-visit suite synthesizes all of the past context – notes, labs, imaging, faxed documents – into a single unified dashboard to help save clinicians from the thousands of clicks a day in the EHR to search for information. Ambience also evaluates the patient’s care journey against evidence-based guidelines to highlight gaps in care for the clinician. During the visit, Ambience’s in-visit suite automatically generates documentation for the clinician so they can focus on the patient. The platform’s post-visit suite assists with selecting the most appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes, pending relevant orders and ensuring that documentation appropriately supports all of the decisions to simplify downstream revenue cycle, prior authorization, utilization management and quality reporting.

In recent studies, Ambience’s AI platform achieved a 27% relative improvement over physician benchmarks – reducing coding errors by approximately one-quarter; becoming part of the solution designed to tackle the billions in annual administrative waste, including $19 billion in diagnosis coding and documentation substantiation errors.

By 2034, the Association of American Medical Colleges predicts a gap of 37,800 to 124,000 physicians in the U.S., including shortages of 17,800 – 48,000 in primary care and 21,000 – 77,100 in specialties. We believe the market opportunity is significant. There are ~100,000 human medical scribes in the US, who earn ~$35,000/year, suggesting that the medical scribe market alone represents a $5B+ wedge, but the total addressable market across administrative workflow – including revenue cycle management, coding, and prior authorization – is, in our view, closer to $200B. As AI technology grows to become the new core infrastructure for operational work, we believe Ambience has the opportunity to define this new category of AI in Healthcare.

Why Ambience?

  1. Broad Clinic Adoption. Ambience’s AI-powered solutions have been adopted by a number of prominent health systems, such as Cleveland Clinic, UCSF Health and John Muir Health. Ambience is leveraged at enterprise-scale across 100+ specialties and subspecialties, including the ED and inpatient settings. We believe this adoption across multiple specialties demonstrates strong product-market fit and high levels of product trust by healthcare professionals.
  2. Positive Customer Feedback. Clinicians using Ambience consistently report reductions in documentation time, saving 2–3 hours per day, lower levels of burnout and higher-quality relationships with their patients. In a study with John Muir Health, clinicians and patients reported that use of ambient AI had significant impact on the healthcare relationship, noting an 11% decrease in clinician burnout, cutting charting time by 24% and boosting patient face-time by 20%.
  3. Product Vision and Differentiation. Unlike transcription-first or template-based solutions, Ambience is designed to deliver fully autonomous documentation. Its unified reasoning model supports 100+ medical specialties with real-time, coding-aware documentation – meaning every note is designed to be  generated with compliance and revenue capture in mind. Ambience has been built to Integrate directly into EHRs like Epic, Oracle Cerner, athenahealth and others. Unlike peers focused on primary care, Ambience’s platform has been structured to live across outpatient, emergency and inpatient settings, where accuracy and financial impact are important.
  4. Experienced Leadership Team. Ambience was founded by MIT alumni Mike Ng and Nikhil Buduma, who combine technical experience with clinical insight. CEO & Co-Founder, Mike’s firsthand experience with  the healthcare system following  a spinal cord injury, led him to believe that clinicians don’t need more tools – they need real operational support. Nikhil, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder, is a technical prodigy who co-authored one of the earliest deep learning textbooks and helped put some of the first transformer models into clinical production. Together, they’ve built a team blending top AI talent with healthcare expertise in an effort to address the industry’s biggest administrative challenges.

Ambience’s long-term vision is to become the intelligence utility for medical care – an agent layer that enables every health system to operate with specialist-level precision, regardless of geography or staffing constraints.

We’re proud to partner with Mike, Nikhil, and the entire Ambience team as they build the future of clinical work.
